WHAT

Having a mentor is one of the best ways to advance as a creative professional, but getting access to people at the top of their game can be difficult. So is knowing what to ask them. On the Active Freelancer show you can learn from other successful freelancers and entrepreneurs as we dive into how they started out, found high paying clients, overcame perfectionism, turned their services into a thriving business, and more. We ask the hard and fun questions so you can draw inspiration and learn from a collective of experiences across a variety of creative industries.

Nobody has all the answers.

I believe there are valuable lessons to be uncovered in the experiences of others who have come before us. In our interviews, you’ll hear about what's been done, what's worked for others (and what hasn't), and learn about the possibilities that exist when you properly position yourself in your market and serve others with your talents. However, your business is unique and the best solutions will always be the ones you come up with from a combination of knowledge, experience, and experimentation for yourself. Whether you're just starting out or have been hustling for a while, Active Freelancer provides the right dose of motivation, entertainment and practical advice to help you work smarter, and create a life of freedom.

WHO

Members of the "Active Freelancer" community are self-employed individuals who understand the true value of their time, services, and physical/mental health and proactively prioritize each accordingly. Being an Active Freelancer is all about working hard, playing hard, and striking a balance between what we're doing and why we do it.

WHY

There has never been a better time to be a young and energetic freelancer or entrepreneur. Colleges aren't preparing us for the types of jobs that exist or that we want. Companies are scared to hire millennials but need our creative and technical talents. Taking the leap and going out on your own can be scary, overwhelming, and stressful, but it can also be extremely liberating, fun, and rewarding. It was 2008 during the last recession when I started making videos for companies. Everyone said I was crazy. Creative agencies were being dismantled and marketing budgets were being slashed. But I knew the underlying need for creative services hadn’t changed. And it still hasn’t.

In our experience, too many of the popular resources for entrepreneurs focus on tech start-ups that need to raise capital, or creating passive income by selling some kind of product. Instead, our show and this site are dedicated to those of us who see the value in offering high demand creative services… trading our time and expertise for money. While the ideas of scaling a business and creating additional revenue streams is attractive, and topics we’ll certainly discuss, we believe in first creating value for our clients.

ABOUT THE HOST

Blaine Coury makes videos for businesses. While in college he saw an opportunity with the growing popularity of web video and YouTube to fill a gap between a clients' in-house capabilities and large commercial production companies. He's grown his single person business from a mini-DV camera bought on credit in 2007 to a multiple 6-figure income. Along the way, he's learned a thing or two about working for yourself, building a team, marketing and selling to Fortune 500 companies, but most importantly how to balance it all with a healthy and fun lifestyle.
